The biggest aesthetic changes are seen up front where the Grand Vitara (dubbed Escudo in Japan) gains new headlights, a revamped bumper and a more modern-looking grille. The upgrades put the aging SUV in tune with Suzuki’s current design language.
The redesign is more minor out back but there is one very noticeable difference: unlike the 2012 model, the 2013 Grand Vitara hides its spare wheel under the trunk floor, revealing a smooth tailgate that encompasses the license plate.
Suzuki will introduce a new range-topping trim level called X-Adventure that is aimed at Japanese customers who want a more premium-looking Grand Vitara. It includes a standard sunroof, 18-inch wheels and a more luxuriously-appointed interior.
The Japanese automaker did not release any technical details about the 2013 Grand Vitara but very little is expected to change. In the United States the venerable 2.4-liter four-cylinder will still be the only engine offered, available with either a manual or an automatic gearbox.
Although the vehicle pictured here is a Japanese-spec Escudo, Autoblog reports that the same treatment (minus the fender-mounted mirror) will be applied to the U.S.-spec Grand Vitara for the 2013 model year. Pricing information will be available closer to the SUV’s launch.
